This article is adapted from my original academic paper on healthcare supply chain management.
A vast majority of Americans are uninformed on how their local healthcare network may operate; a great network would make this experience as seamless as possible so the patient would not feel the harsh reality of its day-to-day operations. The healthcare supply chain consists of a complex network of systems that ensures the critical production, distribution, and delivery of supplies to ensure reliable patient care. Supplies such as medicine, medical devices, and cleaning products all rely heavily on this collaborative approach; any failure in this process could result in a delay in patient care.
Healthcare supply chains are made up of groups of stakeholders consisting of suppliers, manufacturers, distributors, healthcare providers, and regulators, all working together to ensure patients have access to healthcare products and services. Pressures of global competition and the need for extensive inter-organizational collaboration are forcing industries to streamline supply chains to make them more agile, flexible, and responsive (Singh, 2022).
When analyzing healthcare supply chain, one would have to understand the interconnected nature of assets working together to deliver medical products and services to patients. Collectively collaborating to metaphorically form a chain of participants from different sectors, these stakeholders ultimately link together to form a chain that focuses on the delivery of medical care. Ensuring that patients have access to high-quality healthcare products and services while successfully controlling costs, supply chain management plays a crucial role in the healthcare sector (Singh, 2022).
The key components of a healthcare supply chain consist of processes, people, computers, and network infrastructure, all linked together to form a chain. This supply chain is fully responsible for the efficient flow of goods and services from suppliers to patients. This is done in multiple steps with the goal of increasing customer satisfaction by ensuring products are manufactured, delivered, and returned efficiently. Healthcare supplies may be delivered to patients more effectively and reliably by optimizing the supply chain (Singh, 2022).
Most major healthcare organizations are highly dependent on processes. These are sets of logically related tasks that are performed to achieve a defined outcome. Processes were intended to streamline procedures and eliminate obvious bottlenecks and inefficiencies (Rouse, 2017). Processes in healthcare supply chains are seen as the physical business functions that characterize the way goods and services are moved and delivered to healthcare facilities and patients. This is also seen as procuring, managing, and distributing medical supplies from medical suppliers to end users.
The overall healthcare structure is dependent on an efficient healthcare supply chain, and any disruptions in this process can cause a delay in patient care. This is why there is an effort to ensure that supply chains are performing at their maximum capabilities while having minimal downtime. One of the most important parts of modern healthcare is this invisible infrastructure, which supports the reliable delivery of medicine, medical devices, and essential supplies to healthcare facilities and patients.
